Super Mario Bros. 3 is the successor of Super Mario Bros. 2 and the Lost Levels, it is also the predecessor of Super Mario World.

Story
The story takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom and starts late at night. Bowser had sent his children to attack the Kings of the 7 worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom where they are transformed into creatures from past games(With the exception of one in the remakes, who turns into a Yoshi, a creature found in later games). Princess Peach, having heard this, sends Mario and Luigi to end this reign of terror and defeat Bowser. In the end; Bowser ends up kidnapping the princess as always and is then defeated by the Bros.

References to Mario 3. in SMW
- Boos,Thwomps,Bob-ombs, the Koopa Kids, and Munchers are introduced for the first time in this game and are also found in SMW.
- SMW brings the return of the world map first used in SMB3
- A Toad's House can be found in beta versions of SMW, which could have been speculated for use as they were in SMB3 or like Yoshi's House in the finished game.
- The Sunken Ghost Ship was placed in SMW as a reference of one of the Doom Ships used in SMB3
