ROM hacking is the process of modifying ("hacking") a ROM image of a cartridge game to make anything from minor changes to an entirely new game. Such modifications may include editing text, graphics, levels, maps, music, physics and sometimes even the game's programming.
Modified ROMs are usually referred to as "hacks".
