Mario Bros.
From SMWiki
Mario Bros. is the first game to feature Mario as a plumber, and was the first game to feature Mario's brother Luigi (hence its title).
Gameplay
Mario (and maybe Luigi, if you have two players) must see how many levels you can beat and how many points you can collect before getting a game over. To beat a level you must hit the platform below an enemy to stun it and then kick to kill it (Although there is a POW block that stuns all enemies, and vice versa). Kill all enemies to advance in levels.
Enemies
All enemies in Mario Bros. are recurring and can never go extinct, due to the fact that the levels in the game go on forever:
- Shellcreeper: Predecessor to modern Koopas. Because they look so similar, in remakes of the game a koopa was replaced by a spiny.
- Sidestepper: Also known as simply a crab. These enemies have to be hit from below twice to be stunned. These use a standard red pallete.
- Fighter Fly: These enemies are just hopping tame bugs, thats about it. When they're in the air, POW Blocks don't work.
- Mr. Freezy: Originally known as Slipice. It's an ice droplet that makes slippery platforms.
- Fireball: Possible predecessor to modern Podoboos; they can't die and fly across the screen.
Relevance to Super Mario World 1 and SMW Central
There are custom sprites of the crab and Fighter Fly, as well as ExGFX. Some hacks have them act like Goombas, while other hacks make them immune to jumps and others make them die from jumps. Of course, the crab sprite dies in two hits.
- One crab sprite is included with SpriteTool.
- Another can be found here. They both appear to be perfect recreations, with the Super Mario All-Stars GFX included.
- Fighter Fly sprite. It acts just like a Goomba; some hacks have the crab act like one as well.
- This ExGFX package turns Goombas into crabs. However, they're custom crabs that the hacker made himself, rather than a straight rip.
- This ExGFX package gives you the SMAS Super Mario Bros. 3 battle mode background.
- The SMB3 version of Mario Bros. uses the Hammer Bros. theme.
- Here's another variant, this time with SMAS SMB3's Battle Mode intro.
- Here's a more complete soundtrack.
- Prior to the introduction of AddMusic, hackers would get the music from either Demo World 3 or an SMB3 .IPS patch. Here's an XKAS patch that does the same thing and allows for greater flexibility.
