Reaching The Bonus Game Room
This level can be accessed in one of three ways. The first way is the intended way, which is by collecting 100 Bonus Stars. Another way can be accomplished by hacking and placing an exit-enabled object without specifying an exit. Depending on the level number, this leads to either level 0 or 100, an endless bonus game. The third way is to place a level on the overworld without assigning it a level. This will throw you into Level 0/100, which is absolutely impossible to get out of normally.
When accessed through an exit-enabled object, the only way to exit the level is to reset, or wait for time to run out. Dying on the bonus stage causes gibberish to pop up, (Probably time up) and causes the game to think you crossed the midway point. Activiating a goal point or sphere will cause the game to automatically reset the stage abruptly, while hitting a ! Switch or activating a keyhole will exit the level and activate the normal and secret exits, respectively.
The Bonus Game
When playing the bonus game itself, there will be 9 panels. The middle panel will be either a Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Star, while the outer panels will scroll through the three and rotate in a clockwise fashion around the center one. When you hit a panel, it will stop scrolling through the powerups but continue to rotate. After all of the panels have been stopped, for every time 3 of the same symbol occur in a row (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally), a 1-Up Mushroom will fall from the pipe on the left side of the screen. After Mario has collected all of these, the bonus game will end and you will return to the overworld if you accessed it through bonus stars. However, if the level was accessed from an undefined screen exit, then you will remain in the room until the time runs out, killing you, or, if there is no time, wait there forever and have to reset the game.
